As a nation, we complain when we have no damn right to.

But more than that, we try endlessly to give our government exactly what it was designed not to have: total power over its citizens.

One way we do that is by trying endlessly to get federal legislation to cover all sorts of things that are properly none of the federal government's business.

For example:

Abortion. I hate to point this out, but murder is illegal. Killing babies, therefore, is already illegal. If there's a serious question, it is "when is the baby a person?"

This is a link to a gallery of really gross pictures; including an aborted fetus's tiny hands on a quarter. That's not a non-viable tissue mass, you arrogant, unconcerned assclowns, it's a fucking baby. And killing babies is fucking illegal. We don't need a law; we need you to shut the fuck up.

Gay marriage. Wow. What a HUGE issue, needing FEDERAL LAW. Nope. And it's not states' rights, either, sorry to disappoint. Why?

Because there's only one question, folks. Is marriage a religious ceremony or not? If it is, the federal government, under the establishment clause, is expressly forbidden from giving it any legal recognition AT ALL.

If it's NOT religious, then what possible objection can you have to gay people doing it?

If it's religious, you clowns, the government CANNOT PASS A LAW ABOUT IT. The Constitution says "not yours."

Prayer in the classrooms?

You know what my problem is? The notion that ANY religious instruction, of ANY KIND AT ALL, should be allowed in the classrooms is my problem. Why in the fuck isn't that in the churches where it belongs? You have an absolute right to attend any church you want; to take your kids there; to instruct them in any faith you wish.

What you don't have, is the right to attempt to indoctrinate MY son with your lame-brained babble. I don't care who you are; if you are a follower of ANY organized religion, I don't agree with you. Stop trying to force-feed your garbage to my child under the guise of religious freedom. It's freedom if he chooses to go to church; it's indoctrination if you place it on the curriculum at a school which purports to be teaching FACTS.

As far as that goes, Creationism: First, you are an illiterate, inbred, drooling monkey. Second, the Bible does not say, even once, that God didn't use evolution; it also doesn't say anything about the Big Bang not happening. It does say God said "let there be light," and then there was - and hey, I notice that scientists are still able to detect the light from the Big Bang even today.

It kind looks like what might happen if an omnipotent superbeing capable of creating a universe said "let there be light."

And more to the point, all you organized-brainwashing-ists, regardless of what you call yourselves: do you really honestly believe, in the depths of your heart, that God, the creator of all that is, gives a shit if you eat red meat on Fridays? Or what nickname you call him?

Or what you beg for in prayers, despite doing nothing to earn it?

I doubt it. I think if he concerns himself with you at all, he mostly finds you sadly amusing.

You know why? Because the feds think - and your Senator thinks - that "them darkies, they can't fend for themselves, you know; they cave when someone taunts them like a five-year-old, so we have to pass a special law to protect them."

Instead, try this: when someone calls you a name, call them one back. Make one up. You think there's not enough good names for white people? Fine. Insult them in different ways. But stop bitching about it; it's something that any child up until about 15 years ago learned how to blow off from hearing it in a playground at school, and you're seriously CONCERNED over its IMPACT on our CULTURE? And that right there is something else. Dude. Stop suing people. Seriously. If you fall on your ass on the sidewalk, it doesn't mean you get rubber fucking sidewalks; it means you need to learn to look where you're going, so you don't fall down.

You don't get to sue if your "injury" was your own fault. That's not how it works. You don't get to sue for getting caught breaking the law.

Which brings me to illegal immigration.

Bullshit we can't round them up and deport them; go on TV, say something rude, and when they have a march or rally, which they will, deport the lot of them. Conspiracy to commit a crime is in itself a crime, and the people rallying in support of illegal aliens are advocating, quite publically, commission of a crime; this is de facto and de jure conspiracy to commit. Deport all of them, and don't let the legals come back without a hand-written 50-page letter of apology containing the sentence "I promise I will not do it again because the US is better than wherever you sent me to" a thousand times.

And while I'm at it, why aren't these people deported by any of the other federal agencies they go to for help? Recently a local employer got busted with literally hundreds of illegals; ICE rounded them up and deported them. The next day, the low-income housing was almost vacant; WIC had more money, welfare had more money, even the electric-bill assistance folks had more money, because they weren't spending it on the FUCKING ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Yet none of those agencies made step one to try to get those people busted for taking advantage of federal programs.

Oh, and before I quit ranting, I want a very special "FUCK YOU" to go to anyone who thinks that driving an electric car is better for the environment. Why? Because first, electricity does not come from the magical jellybean fields, you fucktard cockmonkeys, it comes from power plants which run on fossil fuels.

And second, they don't have to strip-mine for the batteries in a Hummer.

So your paper-mache greenmobile is in fact more damaging to the environment than my gas-guzzling '85 Dodge.

In conclusion, I may be a rude bastard, but you know what? I don't infringe on anyone's rights; I don't rob, steal, or break the law in any way more serious than speeding. The Plot Sickens...

Some of you have been following the hoopla surrounding the deaths of wrestler Chris Benoit and his family.

Well, it got a little weirder today.

For those of you who haven't been paying attention, Chris Benoit apparently - we'll get to that - killed his wife and son over the weekend, and then hung himself at some point before authorities investigated his home on Monday. He had missed a couple of WWE events, and some of his friends had received "disturbing" text messages, thus prompting the investigation.

But they just discovered that Chris Benoit's wikipedia entry was edited - 14 hours before the investigation revealed the Benoit family's deaths - to say that he had recently missed WWE events due to the death of his wife. From an IP in Stamford, Connecticut, where the WWE is based. But wait... the bodies were found at Benoit's home in Atlanta.

Something tells me we haven't heard the end of this.

Somewhat Of A Sleeper...

You know, sadly, sometimes I think movie critics are fucking retarded.

I know, you don't yet know what I'm talking about.

So, some background.

I'm a geek. You may not know this already, but I have literally hundreds and hundreds of books, spread across many genres, with SF, fantasy, and horror pretty much dominating.

While I don't go to cons, and I don't cosplay, I can still totally geek out over a good SF box set.

I've read maybe 500 SF novels in my lifetime.

So, things like time travel, psychic powers, the supernatural, alternate universes... these things are old friends to me.

However, they're rarely treated well in the movies. For some reason the movies seem unable to take any of these subjects seriously, despite the enormous amount of fairly serious - and fairly good - literature devoted to them.

For example, what's the single movie in recent years to pay any attention to the alternate universes theory? "The One," in which the theory of a multiverse is used as an excuse to watch Jet Li fight...

...Jet Li.

Now, that can be quite enjoyable; but it's hardly a serious movie, you know?

So, of course, when a movie comes along that treats the subject of psychic powers, and alternate realities, fairly seriously, critics of course feel morally obligated to hate the eyebrows off it.

So: Tara and I just got through watching "Next," which has Nicholas Cage, Julianne Moore - in a fairly rare semi-villain role - and Jessica Biel, who mostly provides decoration, although she does have one good scene, in it.

Right.

Nicholas Cage may not be your cup of tea; personally I think he's underrated, if anything, but you have to give him credit - even if you don't like him - for picking interesting movies.

So: that's a good sign.

The movie begins in Vegas, where Cage plays a guy named Chris Johnson, who is a stage magician, who happens to be able to see the future. His future. For two minutes ahead.

That's all he can do. It's more impressive than it sounds; it's damn hard, for example, to fistfight with a guy who can see every swing you take in advance. But still; he's hiding in plain sight, trying to lead a fairly normal day-to-day life.

There's some babble about a stolen nuke, by a group which is never identified; I suppose that's because really other than "boom" their goals are pretty irrelevant to the story. At any rate, the FBI, led by Julianne Moore's civil-rights disregarding ass, decide the way to find the bomb is by snatching the psychic guy, and making him tell them where the bomb is. Of course, that's harder than it looks; after all, he can see them coming.

I was pleasantly surprised by several things in this movie, actually; the manner in which they treat Chris' ability is much less melodramatic than most movies of the type - in fact, the character is obviously mostly annoyed by the ongoing attempts to exploit it. The effects they used to display the way he perceives future events are really clever, although they only use the best version of the effect a couple of times, and only right at the end of the movie. There are a couple of fairly nice twists, and all in all, it was quite an enjoyable movie.

Ok, that's what I originally came here to say; it was fun, and more people should go see it; Tara and I both liked it, and since she's less into that sort of thing than I am, that should count for something.

However. I went to try to see which theaters in our area are showing it, and made the mistake of going to Yahoo Movies. The reviews were awful. So, off to www.rottentomatoes.com, the iconic movie uber-review site.

Were these folks watching the same movie I was?

EVERY critic complained about plot holes. EVERY critic claimed it was "dumb."

I guess SOMEONE *AHEM MR PRODUCER, AHEM I SAY* forgot to send out the "good review" bribes that week.

Because what they talk about as "plot holes" are explicitly explained in the movie; they claim the movie "breaks its own rules" after, again, explicitly explaining why; and I am forced to wonder, after reading the reviews, who was dumb? The screenwriters, who did a great job moving things right along, or the reviewers, who like to claim things make no sense, just because they are too simple to understand even the most overt, handholding explanations in movies if they don't come with five-figure checks attached.

It's no wonder, with reviews as dismal as this movie got, why it's not making money in the box office. That's a shame, because while it's not the best movie of the year, it's certainly enjoyable and entertaining, and when studios get this kind of treatment at the box office, it just reconfirms their ongoing decision to inflict endless remakes and sequels, and "romantic comedies," on the apathetic movie audiences, instead of attempting anything new and different.

Seriously; go check this movie out. It won't win best picture this year, but it sure deserves better than it's getting, and the only way to get the studios to stop making remake after remake and instead try new things is to vote with your wallet.

One Way To Have A Unique Breakfast...

You will need:

• Bacon
• Eggs
• Grated cheese of your preference!

Start by greasing as many slots in a muffin tin as you intend to fill; we just took a paper towel and swiped around in there with margarine. Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees.

In a bowl, whisk as many eggs as muffin slots, briskly, until they are well scrambled.

In each muffin slot, wind one bacon strip around the inside of the slot so it makes a kind of cup.

(As an alternate method, you can put a dollop of biscuit dough at the bottom of the cup and use slightly less egg; we didn't do that today, but it's yummy too. As another variation, you can also add ingredients to the egg: chopped onions, mushrooms, garlic, A1 Steak Sauce - don't knock it til you try it - salsa, what have you.)

Pour one egg into each slot, filling the bacon cup. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Place the filled tins in the oven for 5 minutes; drop the temperature to 350, and bake another 10 minutes.

The eggs should be fluffy, and resemble bacon-wrapped muffins.

I Just Have To Make A Note.

I don't watch Britain's Got Talent.

But I may start. They actually had a deserving winner this year.

I'm getting ahead of myself.

Back at the beginning of the season, there was one contestant they frankly didn't expect much from; a gentleman of such unassuming appearance and quiet demeanor that they really just wanted to get his first round over with, so he could go back to his quiet life.

Paul Potts wasn't having any of that.

He walked up on stage, and announced he was there to sing opera.

My friend Julia pretty much nailed it. They made "Oh Noes" faces, and then got shocked by the wowness.

Now, that's just damned impressive, man. I mean really.

Happy Father's Day

My father died in December of 2005, five days before Christmas.

By that time, Tara and I had moved to Pennsylvania; we'd gotten our own place, bought a car, and gotten ourselves settled - broke, but settled - far away from any of my family.

By that time, my brother's son was edging up on a year old; he and his wife were first talking about buying a house.

Now, my son is almost two months old. My brother's daughter is now edging up on 8 months old, and his son just turned 3.

The two of us owe my father a great debt, and neither of us really ever acknowledged it, that I knew about.

I was in the Army, and had been there a while, before I really grew up enough to separate my father's craziness from the things he did right, and was almost 26 before I was really able to talk to him without getting angry and frustrated every time.

I wish I had managed it sooner. My father was right about a lot of things. He was wrong about a lot of things, too, but the things he was right about tended to be the important ones, and the things he was wrong about... didn't.

I miss my father. In the last 5 years of his life, I got more good advice, and a hell of a lot more knowledge of how to be a father, than in my whole life prior to that. I miss watching football with him; I miss arguing politics with him across Fox News Sunday (lol) and I miss just talking to him.

I learned a hell of a lot from my father. I only really knew how much when I first held my son; a lot of the things he taught me never really made sense until then.

I learned to be a father from him.

I hope I do as good a job as he did.

And I hope he's watching me do it.

What A Goddamn Shame... Make That, "CRIME"

You've been to a hospital, right?

You know, the places where they supposedly treat sick people, following the Hippocratic Oath, and try to get them well?

Don't make the mistake of lumping the Martin Luther King Jr - Harbor Hospital, in Los Angeles, in with those places.

I've been in hospitals. Most of them are professional, well-equipped, and make serious attempts to do the best thing for the patients.

Good thing I'm not in LA.

On May 9th, at the afore-mentioned non-hospital, a woman died.

That happens; people die all the time, even in the hospital.

But they don't usually bleed to death from a perforated bowel while right in the middle of the emergency room, while hospital employees refuse to treat them, and the 911 dispatchers refuse to help.

Yeah, you heard me right.

Hospital janitors did a stellar job, or so the story claims, cleaning up the blood and vomit around the dying woman as she convulsed on the floor, yet made no attempt to help her, or get the attention of anyone who could.

Upon asking, her husband was informed that she had been discharged and was no longer a patient, and as such the hospital didn't have to treat her.

Upon calling 911, her boyfriend was informed that 911 couldn't and wouldn't do anything to help, because they were at a hospital. A second bystander called 911 as well, and after the dispatcher refused to help despite a fairly graphic description of the hospital's monumental indifference to her plight, the bystander told the dispatcher that God should strike him for his actions.

The LA County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of Edith Isabel Rodriguez "accidental."

It was an accident only in the sense that that "hospital" is the place the ambulance crew brought her.

The MLK-Harbor Hospital, it turns out, has a long track record of killing its patients; in fact...

...wait for it...

it's NEAR losing federal funding, and is under investigation.

"Investigation?"

Explain to me what has to be investigated? This "hospital," having received a patient for treatment via ambulance, allowed her to bleed and convulse on the floor for 45 minutes, with hospital staff including trained nurses watching her and NOT DOING A GODDAMN THING, until she DIED.

"No more federal funding" doesn't cut it, folks. Every doctor at that hospital ought to lose his license, as should the nurses; everyone on staff at the emergency room that night should get jail time for negligent homicide; the hospital ought to be immediately closed; and further, the night shift nurses on the admissions desk at the emergency room should be beaten with canes, Singapore-style.

You killed a woman, deprived her of her life, because you couldn't be bothered to walk 20 feet to see what was up, you pathetic wastes of oxygen.

You killed her, because you were lazy.

I'd reserve some hate for the 911 system, as well; what kind of human being, much less a trained dispatcher, tells a man who is watching his wife die that he can't even contact paramedics for him?

What kind of human being mops up blood around someone convulsing and doesn't even report it?

WHAT KIND OF GODDAMN ANIMALS DO YOU HAVE RUNNING THIS FACILITY, ANYWAY?!?

This is not about universal health care. It is not about medical malpractice lawsuits. It is not about a hospital failing a single patient. It is about a hospital which has failed minimum standards "repeatedly;" a hospital which employs a triage nurse capable of missing peritonitis - one of the most painful conditions a human being can suffer - not once, or even twice, but on THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS; a hospital which employs staff so callous they mop up the blood around her convulsing body and move on without even attempting to report anything out of the ordinary; a hospital so oblivious to the plight of its patients that it allowed a woman to convulse and vomit blood on the floor for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES without making any attempt to treat, or triage, her.

It is about the county officials refusing to decertify and close that hospital.

It is about the LA County Sheriff's Department operating a 911 call center with not one, but two different dispatchers who reacted to this call with such unconcern they didn't even note it as a request for assistance.

It is about a huge, grievous failure on the part of the Los Angeles government; and it is one that by God should not be allowed to pass unchallenged.

This woman lost her life to simple, glaring indifference.

That indifference should be repaid with every legal action, both civil and criminal, that can possibly be thrown at them, and then the matter should be taken out of the LA County Sheriff's jurisdiction, so that he doesn't get a Paris Hilton-style soft spot for these negligent murderers, and let them go with 3 days served.

Fuck them. Let these disgusting specimens rot in jail forever. It won't bring Ms. Rodriguez back, but it might make her boyfriend and son feel that justice was done. That might actually happen this time; see, this time, the whole sorry ordeal, all 45 minutes of her death, was captured on video.

God Bless The Second Amendment

Here's a little news story you might not have heard:

In Anoka county, Minnesota, on Thursday, an off-duty, out-of-uniform police officer, driving an unmarked car, got into a little traffic spat with another driver, one Martin Treptow, aged 35.

Treptow had his wife and two children in the car, so when the other driver - the police officer, unbeknowsnt to Treptow - parked his car behind the Treptow's at a stoplight, got out, and pulled a gun, Treptow did the only thing he could think of to protect his family from what he saw as an immediate threat to their life.

He pulled out his firearm and fired three shots at his assailant; hitting the officer once in each leg, and once in his arm.

The officer, having been punked out by a civilian, failed to return fire. Thankfully, he is fine, and hopefully will know better than to pull a weapon on someone when out of uniform in the future; he was treated at the hospital and released.

Treptow has been released - as it should be - without charges; he had a permit for his gun, and used it exactly as it should be used - to defend his family from an immediate, imminent threat.

Personally, as I tend to take the Constitution seriously, I don't like the permits at all, but I understand them. But that is an argument for another time, and certainly another blog post.

What happened here is that a law-abiding citizen used force in defense of his family, in exactly the way the Second Amendment was originally intended to provide for; he was released without charge, because he complied with the law; and for once, justice appears to have been served.

Not too common these days. And I hope the officer has the good sense - although personally I doubt it based on his behavior - to NOT sue the Treptows; this incident was entirely his fault, and should not be laid at the Treptow's door.

Mr. Treptow: I salute you. Not very many people these days have the balls to defend their families at all, much less to do so with firearms.

Next time, stop watching so many movies, and aim center mass, though, hmmmm? Much as I admire and respect the officers of the law, anyone stupid enough to pull a gun while out of uniform because of road rage deserves a Darwin Award.

"See, I Told You So..."

You may remember, some time back, my saying that the Nintendo Wii was better, and a better value, than the Sony Playstation 3. (The XBOX360, also, although I didn't specifically mention it there.)

It appears everyone else agreed with me.

So, let's sum things up, shall we?

The Microsoft XBOX360 first hit stores in the 4th quarter of 2005; the Wii hit a year later; the Playstation 3 hit at the same time - almost exactly - as the Wii.

So, how are they doing?

XBOX360: 5,400,000 sold to date.

Playstation 3: 3,600,000 sold to date.

Wii: 7,370,000 sold to date.

I would note that that's just short of as many as the competition COMBINED.

Noooooo, Nintendo had a BAD idea, making the system affordable, and all. Microsoft's XBOX division has so far lost - LOST - over 4 BILLION dollars, and they expect to begin making a profit on the hardware - by unit, not total - sometime in 2008.

Sony is still losing literally hundreds of dollars a unit on the PS3 hardware, with no end in sight for that particular cost.

Nintendo, however, seems to be doing quite well. Considering the actual hardware costs them around $160 to make, and the console sells for $249, Nintendo has been making a profit from day 1.

Let's play with that a bit, shall we?

Assume that the stores selling the system give it a 10% markup to get to the $249 price point, and that it's been marked up before - in fact, so much, that Nintendo itself only makes $40 on each system.

That's likely fairly close to accurate, by the way; 10% markup is in fact a bit high for a big-box store. On hardware, anyway; where they gaffle you is on accessories. Those printer cartridges? They do NOT cost Best Buy $20 anything. More like $5.

But at any rate: let's look at this.

$40 per console, times 7.37 million, means Nintendo has made a tidy sum of $294, 800,000 thus far, just on the hardware alone.

That may not sound like a lot, true. But bear in mind that Microsoft has lost $4 BILLION from their gaming department, and while Sony's losses are as yet undisclosed, they were big enough for Ken Kutaragi, former head of their entire gaming division, to resign from his job two months ago.
